Karang Guni Uncle

How often do you hear someone shouting, “Karang Guni, buay bor zua, gu kor, ray-dio-dian-si-kee” along with the blast from the horn? In other words, “Karang Guni is here to buy your old newspapers, clothes, radio and television.” Today, getting to hear this classic sentence from a Karang Guni is just like catching a rare Pokemon — almost impossible!


This is 68 year old Karang Guni uncle, a figure whom residents of Marsiling are familiar of. He has been working as a Karang Guni for more than a decade. Through these years, he has gained earnest support from residents where they would drop Karang Guni uncle a call to fix an 'appointment date' so they could pass him their used or unwanted items.


A typical day would start at 7AM and end around 6PM. He gets around with his personal bicycle that has a cart at the back where he could store all the items collected. With age catching up, cycling for long hours has been a challenge to him with his knee problems.

However, he always mention it with a smile, “I will still continue to work as a Karang Guni as long as I live because I love my job.” - Karang Guni Uncle

At the end of the day, he will consolidate all the items and cycle to the collector’s warehouse at the industrial building, block 13. This is where all Karang Gunis sell their items and then collect their earnings. Earnings are stable as it varies with the type and quality of the items.

Following his father's footsteps, collector uncle has been in this business ever since his graduation from ITE and have eventually roped his brother in with him till date.
